Recently I was attending a get together, a friend’s nine year old son came to me and said “I still don’t understand the difference between empathy and sympathy,”. I really liked his question and his learning capabilities.
He is an average kid with average absorption rate. But what amused me more is his devotion to understand the world.
As I tried to come up with situations where he could relate because he knew exactly what the person had gone though versus situations where he felt badly but had never personally suffered the same experience, he said, “Before this morning, I would have had sympathy for someone with neck pain but no empathy.”
I started with a neck pain story and finished with a story of cervical vertigo of another client. He also explained that before he slept in a bad position and now has neck pain. And this thing sparked a empathy story about neck pain.
She met with a car accident some years back and almost lost conciousness for many minutes. When admited and while recovering in hospital she experienced a severe neck pain due to whiplash.
She got diagosed for BPPV while recovering in hospital. This is not very much unexpected due the nature of her injury.
Her frequent symptoms include Nystagmus (shaking of the eye), nausea, vomiting, sweating and auditory issues including pain and tinnitus (ringing in the ear).
Moreover, her carvical vertigo was diagnosed after a year. This took so long because the inner ear disease which causes vertigo had to be ruled out first. Most of her symptoms was taken care of physical therapy, but her neck pain and dizziness remained.
At this point, knowing what her condition was didn’t help much as far as the pain and dizziness was concerned. Pain medications alleviated some symptoms but created their own nasty effects. Physical therapy provided the most relief but the exercises didn’t seem to be specific enough.
Before following up on another friend’s advice to see a chiropractor, she did some research and learned that manual manipulation of the neck and spine could actually make the condition worse.
Things were much better now. But even now when she turns her head suddenly at a specific angle she gets pain and dizziness.
After hearing this story myself and my friends son was shocked. I was shocked because I had programs that can help her. WIth this program I have helped many of my friend’s.
Having empathy for this kind of neck pain is fine. But sympathy will suffice.
I’m very eager to know how these programs will help her. Therefore, I requested my new friend to try my neck pain, dizziness and vertigo programs.
